The Pig Man of Shelby Forest is a cryptid local to the Memphis metropolitan area. Said to be a munitions worker during World War II who's face was disfigured in an accident, local legends state that he can still be summoned from underneath the bridge he once called home.
Reported Characteristics
The Pig Man is known for his distinctive snub nose reminiscent of a pig snout. While various versions of the story exist, blaming the incident on anything from a chemical accident to a carelessly lit cigarette, all reports agree he was disfigured by an explosion while working at the Chickasaw Ordnance Works near Shelby Forest. Ostracized by his co-workers, he fled into the wilderness, although his most famous stomping grounds were underneath a bridge not too far from Shakerag Road. Local residents claim that if you drive out to this bridge late at night and flash your headlights, you might be able to draw him out.
Historical Context
Shelby County has a long history of military and naval activity, with Millington being home to various bases throughout the 20th and 21st century. The Chickasaw Ordnance Works where the Pig Man allegedly worked were active during World War II producing guncotton for artillery and munitions, and its abandoned smokestacks still stand tall near the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
